Trent -

Great interview! Anshul; thanks for conducting this interview!

Trent & Anshul – what advice would you give a person who wants to take the leap of faith and leave their day job to pursue Internet Marketing full-time? Do you have a check-list of stuff that has to be done before taking the leap?

Hey Irwin,

I don’t have a checklist per se. Instead, I’d suggest that you make sure that you have a good plan, plus a way to pay your bills for at least a year because the one thing that I can promise you is that it will take 2x as long to reach your revenue goals as you think it will because you can’t yet see the roadblocks that you will invariably run into. Its just part of the deal.

Trent,

Thank you.

I always double my ‘estimates’; I might be laid off, break an arm or something and will be out of service, so won’t be able to give my venture the time it needs…

We can never predict unpredictable events. 12 months to may mean 24 months. 2 years may mean 4 years. Etc.

Another thing I’d like to add to this incredible interview and post:

**ALWAYS** share your passion with others — friends, family, everyone. If you don’t you’re missing UNEXPECTED opportunities. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve found wonderful surprises that helped me in my ventures — and all I had to do was open up, give a piece of my mind… share what I want to accomplish, with them or without them.

Don’t do this for acknowledgment, do it because it’s your ONE FOCUS in life. You won’t sleep right until it’s REAL.

It’s the same thing I put in my ebook on goals —

Whether you use positive OR negative reinforcement, you gotta do what keeps your body moving to accomplish your desires. Constantly. Talking about it helps because other people tend to have resources you don’t know about yet… and they practically come knocking at your door with answers and things you need to get to the “next step”.

Thanks for the prompt reply Trent.

One last thing – if you were going to do a career change (this was going to be done even before learning about internet marketing), had some “risk” capital (let’s say 5-10K), you love the internet and you love business, and your wife would be willing to support you for a year or so to let you pursue your dream of running a business – would you take the leap and why?

Hey Irwin, I would say that it really depends on the level of risk you are willing to take. In my own case, I was working full time for at least 6-8 months at the start before I felt comfortable to call it quits and jump into the business full time. If you have a solid plan to replace your income then I’d say you take the leap.

Great interview Anshul! Thank you Trent for your time. After reading your blog, Anshul, I’ve been woken up to the fact that producing quality content is the way to go. The last couple days I’ve been writing 4-5 articles per day and growing my websites. I’m starting to see traffic and results get better, so I’m very happy with that.

Thanks Anshul for waking me up again and thanks Trent for confirming that what I need to do is build.

Cheers,
Michiel

Hey Michiel,

You are writing all those articles yourself? You are a workhorse man! You might want to think about outsourcing it at some point :)

Hi Trent,

Yes I write them myself now because I have no money for outsourcing. I’m barely getting by as it is. I’ve been in internet marketing for 3 years now and I’m still only making a couple hundred bucks a month, if that much.

Still struggling with seeing people who go from $0 to $10,000 a month inside a year. It’s depressing really.

So I keep fighting, keep writing and keep building ;).

I think you’ll find that most people who’ve made that much that quick (self included) did so by creating a product that teaches other people how to make money online. Or, they created a software product that is for the same niche.

The reality is that the teaching niche is a very lucrative niche.

I understand, and I can tell people how to make money online. It just seems a bit strange. I know the tactics, the strategies and the technical stuff involved, but I can’t seem to get success online. Don’t feel like I can go telling other people how to do it.

I have created several teaching products and tried selling them, with mixed success. I created a Wordpress video training, a video course on how to make your own pizza (yes, seriously…), a guide on goal setting, a guide on how to manage your finances + a spreadsheet and some of them actually made sales. The sales usually lasted the first week/two weeks and then stopped completely, while traffic remained the same. Very frustrating indeed. Was close to giving up on IM completely I have to say.

Anyway, don’t mean to be a whiner. Just have to keep at it, keep creating content and products and keep selling. At some point I’ll get there.

Sounds to me like the area you need to work on is to create products that you already know people will buy. People want to buy products that teach them how to get traffic, how to use facebook, twitter, they want SEO help, they want software to automate, and they want to outsource.

These are just a few of the product categories that sell well.

Thank you for the advice. I know I should be focusing on that. Truth is, I’m not great at marketing products. I’m much more an SEO expert so I want to start focusing on local marketing. Launched a site 3 weeks ago which has now hit #1 for a keyword with a 9.900 exact searches per month. Now in the process of selling a banner.

Not quite your model of selling products, but passive income nonetheless ;)
