Finding profitable niche keywords to build a niche site around is often considered the holy grail of successful niche marketing. So, what exactly is a keyword? well, simply put its the exact word or combination of words (more on this later) a user may type into Google or other search engines like Yahoo, bing etc to find relevant information.
No matter what monetization method you intend to use for your website, whether it be affiliate product promotion, direct information product sale or contextual advertising, your keyword selection decision can decide the future success of your niche site from the very start. Get this wrong and it could literally take years of fruitless SEO work to get any returns if at all.
However, get this right and you could be on page 1 of Google in weeks not years by implementing basic traffic generation strategies. How do I know this, you may ask? It’s simple I have seen it work on a number of my own niche websites beating big corporations and professional SEO firms all the way to page 1 of Google!
I will reveal how I go about finding these “diamond” keywords very shortly but first I’d like to explain what exactly keyword competition is.
Let’s take a look at a couple of simple examples:
Go ahead and type in the phrase “weight loss” in your Google.com search bar and let’s look at some numbers that come up.
Look at the number just below the search bar (this number may vary slightly based on your country location as Google can bias results based on your search history)

266 Million Results!!
What does that mean? It simply means the number of pages you could potentially be competing against to get to page 1 of Google. Now, that’s some competition don’t you agree?
On the flipside let’s now type in a slightly more obscure keyword like “dog training collar calgary”.

Ok, now just 363,000 results. Well, still a substantial number but sounds more reasonable right?
So there you have it. Keyword competition in a very very small nutshell.
But wait. Here’s where the majority of newbie Internet marketers get it wrong! Most of the freely available keyword research information on the Internet teaches you to look at the number of competing pages as the KEY indicator for selecting a keyword. That couldn’t further from the truth!
Here’s the real truth. Number of competing pages should be the LAST indicator you should be looking at when selecting a keyword! Even if the search results indicate less than 5000 competing pages for your selected keyword, your real competition lies in the top 10 pages listed on page 1 of Google. Ultimately, that is your real competition, your niche site needs to be on page one of Google to earn you rewards for your effort or you will end up just being a number in the 50 million other search results no one cares about.
So here’s the million dollar question. How do you accurately assess the strength of this competition? How do you know if those top 10 pages in Google are formula one cars you are trying to beat or Toyota Corollas? (no offence if you own a corolla by the way as they are decent cars).
Ok, let’s complicate this a bit more, can you asses the top five keyword selection indicators listed below simply by looking at the first 10 search results in Google?
1. Page Rank
2. Page authority
3. Domain authority
4. Number of “juice” back-links pointing to any given page
5. Monetization or buyer value the keyword
I would guess not.
Despair not. I am about to reveal my #1 tool to find the “diamond” keywords I mentioned earlier in the post. This tool in my opinion beats all other premium keyword research tools currently available on the market hands down (& believe me I have tried a few).
