Today I would like to share some new link building strategies I have implementing over the last month with some fantastic results in helping boost my rankings by some staggering numbers. In some cases my sites jumped as much as 50 places in Google SERP’s within a matter of days.

Most of these link building strategies are based around the tweaks I made to the use of anchor text in my article submissions. Before we jump into discussing some of the changes I made to my techniques, here is a quick (and a very good) video from the guys at SEOmoz on the use of anchor text:

My old link building strategy

Previously, my strategy revolved around two separate sets of article directory submissions. So, essentially here’s how I used to build links prior to December:

Day 1 – Build My Site
Day 2 – Submit Social Bookmarks using Social ADR which is one of the best and cheapest bookmarking services out there
Day 7 – Submit SPUN Articles to Top tier directories like Ezine, Go Articles, Article Alley etc.
Day 14 – Mass submission to article directories using Unique Article Wizard (I would set the daily submission rate to around 20-25 for a natural trickle through of my backlinks)
Day 21 – Check rankings.
Day 30 – SE Nuke submission if needed (for more competitive keywords)

In majority of cases this strategy was working fine except for two potential issues. Since I was using SPUN versions of my original article in some cases I was seeing my article posts ranking higher than my money site! (given the fact that most of the top tier directories are PR 5 – PR 6 so there is the trust factor).

In addition, I was also spending $5-$6 for every spun articles and this quickly added upto hundreds of dollars to get decent 70-80% uniquely spun articles.

In December I started using two brand new services which I had heard a lot about from fellow Internet marketers. These services are:

Simply PLR (Try It Free Using This Link)
My Article Network (Try It Free Using This Link)

Simply PLR provides a monthly bundle of pre-spun articles ready to submit to networks like My Article Network and Unique Article Wizard. This is a huge cost saver as I receive upto 200 unique articles every month for a fraction of cost of what I was spending earlier.

The second benefit is that since you are not using a SPUN version of your blog article, there is no danger of your article directory submission ranking higher than your money site!

My Article Network has over 20,000 blogs and allows submitting articles with upto three contextual links embedded in every submission. Contextual links are always seen more favourably in the eyes of Google as compared to resource box links which are considered slightly unnatural.

My Experiment with anchor text and link building

Previously, I was using upto 90% exact match anchor text for all my submissions. For eg if my keyword was “how to make money online” I would use that exact keyword as my anchor text in upto 90-95% of article directory submissions.

Since December, I have started using 3 separate variations of anchor text in my article directory submissions pointing to three separate URL’s.

Anchor Text 1 – Exact
Anchor Text 2 – Partial/Phrase Match
Anchor Text 3 – Random

Watch the video below to see this in action in my MAN submissions.

I repeat the same process across 9 submissions targeting 3 separate URL’s with variation in anchor text so each URL gets a good mix of exact, phrase match and random.

In addition, I never use the same URL twice in any single submission as Google will simply discard any SEO benefit to the second backlink pointing to the same URL in the same submission.

Here are some screenshots from rank tracker as proof of the effectiveness if this strategy:

Hi Anshul,

This is my first time visiting your site. I found you via your comment on Trent Dyrsmid’s site. I’m just starting to launch 10 Adsense sites (waiting on one more keyword) in the next couple of weeks and was going to incorporate the use of Simply PLR and My Article Network as my backlinking strategy so your video was helpful. The thing I like the most about this method is that there is no spinning involved! Pretty much cut and paste.

At this point, are you still using any tools from your “old link building strategy”? I am going to experiment with just Simply PLR and MAN for this first set of 10 sites to see how it goes. I’ve used Build My Rank in the past and it’s very effective but there’s so much manual work with Build My Rank. I guess that’s what a VA is for.

Also, I read your About page and was wondering if you are still in the movie industry? While I don’t work in Hollywood, I do work in broadcast television as a professional motion graphic designer and commercial producer. I stumbled onto the internet marketing world about 1.5 years ago and slowly started building my online income. I believe the media skills you and I have are perfect for internet marketing and building niche sites. Good luck with your sites!

Hi Harlan,

Thanks for popping by. I am primarily using the Simply PLR/MAN technique for almost all my sites now although I find that for some low competition keywords even a few manual article directory submissions can often be enough if you have good quality content.

I am still doing some occasional work in the film industry and agree that it helps a lot coming from that background to fo into IM or starting an online business!

Hi Sakhari, they are completely different networks, but MAN has a better quality blog network and also allows you to have upto 3 contextual links with every article submission which is always seen more favourably by the search engines as opposed to just having a resource box (UAW). I use both networks in stages. MAN for driving links to the top level domain on a brand new site and then using UAW for deep links to other posts/pages on the sites.

MAN is no longer accepting new customers. I tried to sign up via your link.

Hi Deborah, yes unfortunately it looks like they have shut down temporarily (probably to do with recent Google updates). We are launching our own services in the coming weeks, which will offer you a cost effective way of building links.

Please watch out for an update on the blog.

Hi Anshul,
Not sure of the date when I became a subscriber to this blog. Am going over all the old posts and finding them very useful. Now that MAN and UAW have been washed out, what other resources do you use for your backlinking? BTW, you have mentioned that you are working on your own backlinking services. Not sure if I saw any mail with an update. Can you please elaborate and give us more details if possible?
Thanks
Cheers
Rema

Hi Rema, I am definitely working on a link building service to provide a diverse range of links through both automated and manual methods. This will include a cost effective option for people who can;t afford to pay hundreds of dollars every month in paid subscription. Please keep an eye out for an email with the details in the next few weeks.
